VPN Watcher – Automatically Close Programs When VPN Connection Is Down

A Virtual Private Network or VPN is used for accessing and using resources of a remote network. It provides the option to enable strict authentication and encryption methods to prevent unauthorized personnel from accessing sensitive information of the network which is being accessed remotely. VPNs are frequently used by remote workers to access data and network resources of remote company offices. VPN Watcher is a handy application for VPN users, which allows closing certain applications from sending any data to a network when VPN connection is not working. VPN Watcher can therefore help you avoid transmitting data from certain application when you are not connected to the VPN. Since VPN access in offices is provided keeping in mind strict measures to avoid confidential data from being leaked,  it makes sense to close data transmitting applications when the VPN connection is down. This can help avoid data from being transmitted by applications across a local network in order to ensure that the controlled applications only send data when they are connected to the VPN.

Before you begin, make sure you’re connected with VPN network. Now launch VPN Watcher and add required application to main interface; select Add Application from File menu and click EXE file. You can enable the Advanced Checking Mode to check whether the VPN server is online or not. Enabling Advanced Checking will check for the server after every 1 second to identify connectivity issues.

VPN Watcher has both a free and paid version. The paid version (worth $15) provides the utility to temporarily suspend (instead of closing) restricted applications. VPN Watcher works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.
