No one is exactly sure why, but Windows Phone 7 makes a big deal about not letting any screenshot app slip into the Marketplace. This gets annoying on numerous occasions, and for us at least, the number one reason to be running a custom ROM on our Omnia 7, is the ability to take screenshots of the apps we review. So far only a handful of options exist if you want to take screenshots of your Mango phone, as you can read in our roundup of WP7 screenshot tools here. Now, WP Screenshot has become the newest addition to the rather short list of screenshot apps in WP7. However, WP Screenshot is no ordinary app, as it lets you do something which no other app has ever done before. This homebrew comes with a desktop client, and the screenshots you take with this app will show up straight on your PC, as long as both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.
Of course, if you don’t have access to a PC at when taking screenshots, WP Screenshot is rendered useless, so do not uninstall those other XAPs you have for that purpose. To get started, go to the source link at the end of this post, and grab both the desktop client and XAP file from there. Once you have done that, flash the XAP to your phone. Now, launch WP Screenshot on your Mango phone, and enter the IP address of your PC in the field at the top of the screen. The camera button, and the Volume keys can be configured as triggers for taking screenshots. The next step is to launch the desktop client, and if the firewall popup shows up, hit Allow .
If you want the app to save screenshots to your computer each time you take one, press CTRL+X and choose a destination folder. For a manual save, the usual CTRL+S will suffice. Before saving a screenshot, you can make changes to it, like rotation, highlighting and resizing the image. If you don’t feel like memorizing the shortcut keys for all these functions (there is no alternative to these shortcuts, as the application has no buttons), then simply remember CTRL+H, which will bring up the help menu, consisting of a list of all the shortcuts available in WP Screenshot.
Like almost every WP7 homebrew app, WP Screenshot is available as a free download, and you can grab the XAP and its desktop client by heading to the source link below.
