Secryptor Encrypts Files Before Syncing Them To Dropbox

Security is always a paramount concern when it comes to storing private information on Dropbox. But no one really wants to give up the convenience of having your files synchronized between multiple devices and having seamless access to them. In other words, we can’t give up cloud storage services, but what we can do is encrypt the files in question before adding them to our Dropbox folder. If that all sounds cumbersome, Secryptor aims to provide an answer by merging the convenience of Dropbox with pre-upload encryption so you don’t have to worry about snooping eyes seeing your files. The application can also store encrypted files offline, is compatible with Windows and Mac OS X, and is available for free on both platforms.

The multilingual application has a simple interface, Encrypting is done via 256-bit AES standards making the files difficult to crack. It produces an encrypted copy of the selected file sporting its own custom SKT extension so no other program can access the information stored in it until you decrypt it with Secryptor again.

Once you’ve installed Secryptor following its all German setup wizard, the most basic operation you will need to perform is to encrypt a file. To do so, you can click the ‘Encrypt File’ button on its UI to select the input file from your computer. It then asks you to select the destination folder i.e. Dropbox or local directory.

Dropbox integration allows you to directly encrypt and upload files to your Dropbox folder. If you select Dropbox in destination channel , the application generates an API code for you when you’ve signed in to your Dropbox account, and you need to copy and paste this code to Secryptor as demonstrated in the screenshot below. Afterwards, you also need to select the Dropbox folder from your computer.

The next step is to enter your desired password, then wait whilst the software encrypts the pertaining file. This can take anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes depending on the size of the file.

Beyond file encryption, another valuable feature of Secryptor is the ability to decrypt the same file so you may use it again. To to that, you can click ‘Decrypt File’, select the SKT file from your computer or Dropbox folder, type its pertaining password and you’re done, the process is just that simple. Of course, the time it will take to decrypt the file will also depend on the file size, which means any large file will generally take more time to decrypt.

All in all, Secryptor does a great job of balancing ease of use and robust security. The Dropbox integration is very handy, and the fact that it’s available free is another plus.
