The seasonal operations technician performs unskilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the maintenance and repair of various infrastructure, including parks, streets, trails, sidewalks, bridges, roadsides, irrigation systems, drainage systems, and signage. As a seasonal position, the incumbents receive training to develop skills and proficiency necessary to perform the job.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintains and repairs streets, roads, and public grounds as assigned including removing and replacing road materials, mowing and trimming rights-of-way, weed control, litter removal, and sign maintenance
  • Maintains parks, trails and open space as assigned including planting trees and shrubs; maintaining irrigation systems; mowing and trimming lawns, shrubs and trees; weed control; raking leaves; and litter removal
  • Operates a variety of equipment including 1-ton dump trucks, mowers, weed eaters, tractors, turf-vacs, rototillers, and miscellaneous hand tools
  • Completes and submits daily work reports, work orders, and payroll timesheets in an accurate and timely manner
  • Takes responsibility for own actions when errors and mistakes are made to allow for learning from those mistakes
  • Inspects and maintains assigned equipment and vehicles by checking fluid levels of vehicles and equipment
  • Cleans assigned vehicles and equipment
  • Clears weeds and trash in parks and along roadways
  • Applies weed control chemicals and fertilizers
  • Clears ice and snow from streets, roads, parking lots and sidewalks to insure the safety of the community
  • Maintains cleanliness and sanitary conditions of restrooms as assigned in order to promote personal hygiene and provide operational public facilities
  • Assists with installation and maintenance of drainage systems
  • Assists with maintenance of pavement markings and signs
  • Assists with maintenance of public rights-of-way
  • Assists with repair and maintenance of infrastructure
  • Assists with traffic control signs, barricades, and flagging
  • Assists in preparations and setup for City-wide and department special events which may require flexed scheduling and working on holidays
  • Accepts new work assignments and schedules work hours to meet the needs of the organization
  • Cooperates with co-workers, supervisor and other departments to foster the spirit of a team environment
  • Offers assistance to co-workers when needed
  • Communicates ideas clearly and respectfully in order to improve processes
  • Listens to all customers and acts accordingly
  • Understands written and verbal assignments, and asks questions if needed
  • Keeps supervisor apprised of issues and concerns within the organization

  • Applies chemicals, fertilizers, and other hazardous materials following all safety precautions
  • Operates hand tools, vehicles and equipment following all safety precautions

Minimum Qualifications:
High School degree or equivalent and municipal maintenance experience preferred. Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license for all positions requiring operation of a City vehicle. Other applicable certifications may be required at City expense

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge or ability to learn streets, parks, trails, and open space maintenance
  • Knowledge of safe operating procedures for heavy equipment, machines, tools, and toxic agents
  • Ability to learn the methods, practices, and procedures of road maintenance, landscape maintenance, and general maintenance of City facilities
  • Ability to learn City policies and procedures
  • Ability to develop relationship with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to read, understand, and complete written requests and work assignments
  • Ability to understand and respond appropriately to verbal directions
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the public
  • Ability to perform required duties in varied and extreme weather conditions
  • Ability to learn industry standards and codes and implement them into the daily completion of projects

Equipment Used, Work Environment and Physical Activities:

  • May be required to operate motor vehicles including snow plow, one-ton dump truck, skid steer, backhoe, roller, weed tractors, and mowers
  • Must be able to operate a cell phone and two-way radio
  • Occasional use of a personal computer
  • Striper, sign-making equipment, air compressor, jackhammer, welder, torch set, concrete saw, rotor-tiller, aerator, trencher, weed trimmers, trailer, vibratory plate, chainsaw, and hand tools
  • Reads and understands instructions; writes legible work reports and notes; communicates information and responds to questions individually and in small groups.
  • Performs simple mathematical calculations by hand or using a calculator
  • Applies common sense understanding to carry out simple written and oral instructions; deals with standardized situations or problems involving a few concrete variables
  • Physical activities include working in a confined space, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, and lifting for periods of time in various individual conditions. May be required to work on ladders or bucket trucks above ground
  • Must be able to lift a maximum of 100 pounds
  • Must be able to read instructions and respond to spoken communications
  • Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions including cold, snow, rain, ice, and heat. May be exposed to odors, smoke, noise, vibrations, dust, intense light and chemicals including cleaners, solvents, paints, and other toxic agents
