Travels to inspect work facilities, jobsites, & equipment under direct supervision to ensure compliance with Federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations (e.g., inspects fire extinguishers, electrical hazards, eye wash stations, vehicles, walking/working surfaces, etc. for safe operating conditions); assists assigned staff (i.e., district hazardous waste coordinator & emergency coordinator) in reviewing storage of hazardous waste materials (e.g., bituminous asphalt, fuels, paints); performs walking inspections of worksites (i.e., bridges, roadways & buildings), reviews chemical inventory, observes workers for use of required safety apparel (e.g., glasses, hard hats, goggles, respirators); addresses unsafe worksite behavior & imminently dangerous situations by reviewing with employee & supervisor (including closure of worksite); inspects machinery for existence of properly installed safety devices; performs or recommends testing of work areas when needed to determine existence of toxic materials/hazardous conditions (e.g., drinking water contaminants, air quality, noise levels); assists traffic control manager in reviewing traffic control setup for proper safety practices.

Investigates personal injury & vehicle crashes; interviews claimants; obtains police reports & witness statements; operates personal computer (e.g., Microsoft Office) to prepare & submit investigatory & inspection reports; assists employees in completing accident reports, injury claims & workers’ compensation forms via telephone or email or in person. Processes Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) forms (e.g., FROl-1 (First Report of Injury), PS-2); corresponds with Careworks representatives, reporting injuries of district personnel & receiving updates; uses Microsoft Excel to compile accident & injury statistics; provides accident & injury statistics to senior leadership, supervisor & district safety committee members.

Assists supervisor in administration of Safety Business Plan & implementation of annual safety work plan; provides safety-related training at various district facilities; explains procedures, existing laws & regulations through use of lecture, film & various visual aids; creates & distributes educational materials & posters related to safety; conducts periodic fire drills & other related safety education as necessary; performs various duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of undergraduate major program core coursework in environmental health; must be able to provide own transportation.
  • Or 12 mos. exp. in conducting safety, health & fire inspections of work sites or residential care facilities or personal accident & injury investigations &/or vehicular accident investigations
  • If operating state-owned vehicle must show proof of valid Driver’s License OR must provide own transportation
  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.

Knowledge of governmental regulations & departmental guidelines for industrial safety, health & fire inspections; employee training & development*; interviewing*; public relations*; industrial safety & health inspection procedures & techniques*. Skill in operation of audio-visual equipment*; use of fire extinguisher*; operation of industrial hygiene monitoring equipment*. Ability to define problem, collect safety & health data & determine violations; prepare inspection reports & maintain accurate satellite facility records; prepare & deliver speeches before specialized audiences; recognize safety warnings. Supplemental Information:
This position is overtime eligible per FLSA Standards.

This position shall be filled pursuant to the provisions of the OCSEA/AFSCME contract.
