Purpose of position:
The researcher will produce and oversee research to increase the understanding of incorporating women’s rights into social accountability agendas and on increasing women’s leadership and women’s rights as part of our work on extractive industries and on local humanitarian leadership. The research will provide greater understanding of incorporating women’s rights in extractive industries revenue accountability agendas. It will likewise, provide greater understanding of incorporating women’s rights in humanitarian decision-making spaces and efforts to build capacity of locally-led humanitarian action. The researcher will work to ground Oxfam’s and partners’ efforts in gender analysis to propose institutional and policy reforms in developing social accountability agendas and promoting women’s rights. Oxfam engages in debates on EI revenue accountability and on national and local level leadership in humanitarian action.

This researcher will be responsible for both research project management and conducting research. The researcher will oversee research done in collaboration with external researchers that explores experiences in incorporating women’s rights intoorganizational operations and in social accountability agendas; and promoting transformative leadership for women’s rights. Research will be reviewed and conducted in multiple country contexts. The researcher will integrate research into programming and collaborate with program and monitoring and evaluation colleagues to contribute to a learning agenda on issues of women’s rights, transformative leadership, and social accountability.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Ensure delivery of all research products on incorporating women’s rights into EI revenue accountability agenda, committed to in project agreement with Hewlett Foundation.
  • Research project management.
  • Lead on synthesis and/or comparative analysis in research projects.
  • Conduct gender analysis on EI revenue accountability and local humanitarian leadership.
  • Develop conceptual and analytical framework for research projects.
  • Contribute to and manage country case study research projects on incorporating women’s rights in EI revenue accountability agendas (Zambia and Dominican Republic).
  • Contribute to and manage country case study research on incorporating women’s rights in local humanitarian capacity, in collaboration with colleagues in country offices.
  • Contribute to designing and implementing data collection instruments, informing monitoring.
  • Collaborate on developing learning questions for which research will provide greater understanding.
  • Contribute to research peer review system.
  • Translate research into more accessible materials for different audiences for Oxfam.
  • Internally, serve as expert resource on research production and on gender analysis at Oxfam America and as a member of the Oxfam Research Network.
  • Present research findings in public forums.
  • Disseminate/communicate research findings internally for awareness and use.
  • Contribute to fundraising proposals for gender research.
  • Handle other related research tasks as requested by the Research Director.

Required qualifications:
Education:

  • Ph.D. in gender studies, sociology, political science or relevant social science, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.

Experience and Core Competencies:

  • 3-5 years demonstrated experience in research project management and gender analysis.
  • Knowledge of the fields of gender, international development, humanitarian relief.
  • Research experience in the issues of women’s rights and leadership, social accountability, gender budgeting and auditing, non-profit leadership
  • Strong skills in gender analysis, including utilizing secondary quantitative data.
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Strong interpersonal communications and writing skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and under pressure.
  • Ability to work in team setting and independently.
  • Strong comprehension of Spanish. Comprehension of French or Arabic a plus.
