Research Assistant III job – The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine – Silver Spring, MD

Conduct bacteriology, immunology, and some clinical microbiology assays

Culture diverse bacteria (Lactobacillus, Staphylococcus, Acinetobacter, etc.) utilizing classical microbiology techniques.

Perform laboratory research projects, including animal experiments using rodents and swine, collection and organization of data. Make detailed observations about experiments. Provide basic data analysis and interpretation.

Provides quality control, trouble shooting and the maintenance of specialized reagents and equipment.

Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks.

Assists with the preparation of technical reports, summaries, protocols, and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.

Performs data entry for research projects and maintains databases.

Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures. Provides leadership in the proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.

Process wound tissue samples for bacterial enumeration.

Makes appropriate medias, and plates for classical microbiology culturing.

Maintains supplies in the laboratory and keeps the laboratory area clean.

Provides collaborative assistance to other Research Assistants that require the incumbent’s expertise.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques; ability to follow general instructions; good communication and analytical skills; ability to troubleshoot technical procedures; ability to work independently; ability to plan, multitask and prioritize.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or a related scientific discipline.

Minimum Experience:
2 to 4 years of laboratory experience.

Physical Capabilities:
long periods of standing and sitting; handling various chemicals.

Work Environment:
laboratory environment; may require working evenings and weekends; may involve working with biohazardous materials.

Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior approval of the Vice President of Human Resources.
