Reduce Noise By Changing CD-Rom & DVD-Rom Drive Speed

Changing the CD-Rom or DVD-Rom drive speed will effect the performance too, but what if there is a CD or DVD in your drive which you don’t use? Sometimes a person needs a type of CD which may be needed later, so instead of having to remove and insert it again, most people just leave it there.

If your CD-Rom and DVD-Rom makes huge noises, this is because it spins at 48x speed even when you are not using it, this happens when you go to My Computers and in some other instances. The required minimum speed to spin is 8x, so if you are looking to reduce the speed(so lesson the noise), then check out RimHill.

Note: This tip is for advanced users only, since it requires to manually remove one registry key too for uninstallation purpose in future.

Once you run the program, it will show a small system tray icon from where you can adjust the maximum speed of the drive. Apart from it, there is also an option to eject & load a new cd and spin up & spin down the drive.

According to the developer, “To remove Rimhill you must only delete the Rimhill.sys file in the %SystemRoot%System32Drivers directory and delete the registry keys below HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesRimhill“. This is an advanced technical stuff, so make sure you know enough about it before using this program.

Download RimHill

It works on Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista. It might also work on Windows 7 but has not been tested there. Enjoy!
