Internship

MEDICATION DISPENSING — Under the direction of a Pharmacist

  • Selects medication accurately based on medication order/label
  • Labels medications in accordance with federal, state and local laws
  • Dispenses medication only after verification by a pharmacist
  • Reprints label from patient medication profile as needed

STERILE PREPARATION COMPOUNDING

  • Follows procedure for proper cleansing and garbing prior to sterile preparation compounding
  • Prepares patient-specific sterile preparations under supervision of a pharmacist
  • Prepares non-patient specific sterile preparation batches according to written protocol
  • Demonstrates proper aseptic techniques
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills in performing dosage & volume calculations
  • Dispenses medication only after final verification by a pharmacist

MEDICATION STORAGE INSPECTIONS

  • Conducts medication storage inspections in patient care areas thoroughly and timely
  • Resolves deficiencies with appropriate Nursing or Pharmacy manager
  • Completes inspection report accurately
  • Returns expired / excessive medications to the appropriate Pharmacy storage area

EMERGENCY MEDICATION BOX PREPARATION

  • Fills emergency medications according to the hospital-approved list
  • Labels boxes with correct expiration date
  • Completes refill log as per procedure

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE KIT PREPARATION

  • Prepares controlled substance kits accurately
  • Prepares sufficient quantities to meet the needs of the Department
  • Completes all required documentation

PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT / QUALITY MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES

  • Demonstrates understanding of performance improvement processes and principles
  • Participates in the Department’s performance improvement activities
  • Complies with the Department’s quality control processes

INVENTORY CONTROL

  • Participates in maintaining adequate stock level of medications
  • Replenishes stock as needed in work areas and notifies manager of medication and supply shortages
  • Reviews and fills floor stock request for patient care areas as needed
  • Segregates expired medications from usable stock
  • Returns usable medications to stock and disposes of expired/unusable medications appropriately

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participates in Medication Utilization Evaluations as assigned
  • Provides medication-related information to nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals as needed
  • Currently enrolled in an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) program or a graduate of an accredited pharmacy program
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience at a hospital pharmacy is preferred.
  • Current New York State Pharmacy Intern permit
  • Knowledge of brand and generic medication names
  • Knowledge of pharmacotherapy
  • Knowledge of medication dosage calculations
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Sterile product compounding skills preferred
