The Payroll Trainer is responsible for assisting the National Payroll Training Leader with developing training programs and providing hands-on training, primarily focused on the payroll software applications, payroll laws and regulations and customer service skills necessary to consistently meet the needs of Heartland Payroll, Inc. customers.


  • Train newly hired payroll specialists on the use of the Heartland Payroll software as well as policy and procedure as it pertains to client payroll processing
  • Develop presentations for staff training sessions to provide continuous training as well as review of seasonal subject matter
  • Deliver staff training sessions on a regular basis
  • Must report results and overall assessment of on-going training activities
  • Order all necessary training supplies, books and software
  • Suggest additional training topics needed in the offices based on observation/feedback of the front line staff
  • Other administrative and clerical duties as assigned and requested


  • Ability to effectively teach new subject matter to an audience containing both a beginner and an experienced audience
  • Utilize a variety of training techniques to ensure maximum effectiveness of training program
  • Proficiency in all Heartland Payroll software applications as they pertain to training
  • Proficiency in the development of PowerPoint presentations
  • Comfortable presenting training instruction “live” and via conference call
  • Comfortable in both group and 1 on 1 training situations
  • Excel in communication skills, both verbal and written in addition to strong interpersonal skills
  • Able to multi task with the ability to rearrange priorities on short notice
  • Able to travel up to 20% of the time
  • Able to adjust schedule to meet training needs( 8:00-5:00 EST or 8:00-5:00 PST )
  • Strong problem resolution skills
  • Able to work within time constraints to learn a topic & deliver presentations quickly
  • Able to work well in teams

Education / Experience:

  • Associate’s Degree preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years experience providing customer support in the payroll industry
  • – Or – an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
