Patient Safety Aide – Emergency Dept. – 16-266 job – LANDMARK MEDICAL CENTER – Woonsocket, RI

The Patient Safety Aide performs one-on-one for patients requiring observation to ensure patient safety in a fast paced, high stress environment.

Under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager/Assistant Nurse Manager/Resource/Professional Nurse, and within established Hospital and departmental policies and procedures, performs patient observation at the level deemed by the RN to ensure the security and safety of the patient.

Ensures and maintains a safe environment for patient. Calls nurse for assistance if patients behavior places the patient or staff at risk.

Knows what precautions are necessary in caring for the patient by being aware of patients schedule/plan for the day.

Assists RN, within their level of training, with patient care, comfort needs, and hygiene.

Advises nursing staff appropriately when patient behavior requires immediate attention, i.e. if patient is observed trying to pullout IV lines, patient states they are in pain, patient is observed performing repetitive motion.

Documents completely on the Constant Observation Flow Sheet as directed by RN.

Serves as liaison between patient/family member and ED staff. Refers all patient questions or questions from family members to appropriate nursing staff.

When appropriate, may keep patient occupied with distraction activities.

Assist in Code Gray requests for possible patient or visitor restraint. Utilizes de-escalation techniques (verbal/physical) minimizing the need for restraint whenever possible. Avoids unnecessary physical force and abusive language.

Documents and reports safety issues to manager. Uses judgment regarding safety issues needing immediate attention and contacts manager when necessary.

Understands role in the event of an emergency and ensures appropriate response.

Performs other related duties, as required. High school grad or equivalent. Visual acuity to assess patient condition required. Candidate must be able to work in a high stress environment and assist in “Code Gray” requests for possible patient or visitor restraint. Utilizes de-escalation techniques (verbal/physical) minimizing the need for restraint whenever possible; Behavioral Violence (BVP) training required. Scheduling will include weekends and holidays.
