Oil and Gas Public Health Policy Intern – California

Overall Function

The Climate and Energy Program, Public Health Policy Summer Intern will perform research, writing and advocacy in support of ongoing initiatives being pursued by EDF’s oil and gas program in California – with emphasis on measuring and reducing pollution from oil and gas operations. This is a position in Los Angeles, CA associated with the fulfillment of public health practicum requirements at Charles Drew University.

Extended Summary

EDF’s Oil and Gas program has a growing presence in California, and is seeking to accomplish significant milestones over the next year. Building off the success and lessons learned in other state campaigns, the Oil and Gas team is attempting to pass and implement the most rigorous oil and gas methane regulations in the nation. At the same time, the emergence of new technology for measuring and monitoring methane has set the stage for a robust local effort to deploy air measurement sensors at oil and gas sites within the urban core. The intern will work to further each of these efforts.

Key Responsibilities

The public health policy intern will assist staff in EDF’s California offices with specific projects including, but not limited to:

Performing health impacts analysis of oil and gas operations in Southern California, including preparing a written report summarizing and synthesizing relevant research.

Educating relevant public and community stakeholders on the impacts of oil and gas operations, cultivating community stories and voices, and developing outreach materials based on these interactions.

Working with staff to develop compelling narratives, comments or fact sheets, including formal and informal regulatiory filings that inform and advocate for comprehensive approaches to measure and reduce pollution from California’s vast energy infrastructure.

Organizing relevant public and community stakeholders to perform outreach in emerging and ongoing statewide and local processes in support of efforts to measure and cut oil and gas pollution.


Current progression towards a Master’s of Public Health degree and seeking to fulfill a 300-hour practicum requirement at Charles Drew University.

Ability to work in a professional environment, including attending local government and regulatory hearings

Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to perform outreach to business, regulatory and legislative contacts in furtherance of project research

Strong academic record and demonstrated interest in public health and public interest work.

Summer 2016 (15 weeks, approx. May – September) (start and end dates flexible)


Position shall be used to fulfill a 300 hour practicum requirement. Intern shall work part-time, 20 hours per week.


Minimum wage compensation shall be available, for a total monetary compensation of $3,150. EDF will also work with academic institutions for academic credit.
