Middle School Learning Resources Specialist job – Shady Hill School – Cambridge, MA

( 40% FTE Position- One Year Appointment)

Specific Responsibilities: Utilizing a flexible push-in, pull-out model, provide direct academic support to middle school students in math and humanities Partner with the Middle School Director of Learning Resources and faculty to interpret results of and implement recommendations from student’s neuropsychological evaluations Support faculty by providing observational data about students’ experience and performance in classes and working together to differentiate instruction Maintain close communication with individual classroom teachers and families regarding student progress and supports in place, including team meetings as necessary Work with students, teachers, and families to develop support plans for school and home and help to ensure continuity between school and home where appropriate Attend team meetings, as well as required meetings of the faculty and the Learning Resources Department

Since 1915, Shady Hill, a school of 512 students (PK-VIII) and 90 faculty, has been a leader in progressive elementary education. The year-long Central Subject study, which emphasizes strong content, the use of primary sources, acquisition of essential skills, and self-discovery, forms the core of our curriculum. Grades 3-8 engage in Central Subject, an in-depth, integrated, yearlong thematic study of a particular time or people in history. Faculty who teach a Central Subject are responsible for the skills and content in both social studies/history and language arts and with the support of performing arts and visual arts faculty, the integration these disciplines. Each Central Subject teacher also serves as a homeroom/advisor for 15-19 students. Shady Hill is a deeply mission-driven school. Shady Hill is seeking a 40% (.4 FTE) middle school learning specialist who is skilled in differentiated and developmentally-aligned models of teaching and learning; understands the importance of cultural competency and instructional technology; and is attuned to the cognitive, social and emotional growth of middle school students. Working in concert with faculty, administrators and families, candidate will deliver strategy-based 1:1 and small group academic support to students. Academic support include, but is not limited to, executive functioning skills, writing, reading comprehension, and math. In addition to the .4 salaried role, the learning specialist may have opportunities for additional tutoring to supplement salary. Qualifications: Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in special education or related field. A master’s degree and certification in special education or a closely related field is strongly preferred. A minimum of three to five years of experience working with children at the middle school level is required. If invited to campus as finalists, candidates will be expected to teach a demonstration lesson, interview with appropriate faculty and administrators and respond to a writing prompt. Transcripts will also be requested. Annual salary for faculty is determined according to a step scale commensurate with experience.
