Make Updating Ubuntu Easier With Update Manager Indicator

Updating the Ubuntu operating system can sometimes be a headache. Usually, the default update manager pops-up when new updates become available and one often leaves many unwanted updates checked before executing the update process. Update Manager Indicator is a system tray indicator which helps you manage all your available Ubuntu updates and provides an easy drop down menu for selecting desired updates. Update Manager Indicator also provides bubble message (NotifyOSD) notifications for new updates when they become available.

Update Manager Indicator can be installed either from the source package (from the Launchpad link given at the end of this post) or by entering the below commands in the Terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install indicator-updatemanager

After installation, you can launch this app-indicator from the Unity Launcher Dash and manage your updates by clicking on the application icon from the system tray. The updates menu displays a list of available updates, whereas, the Preferences menu allows selecting the time interval for checking new updates, disabling the annoying update manager auto-pop up, enabling notifications and passive icon.
