Import RSS Feeds OPML File From Google Reader

Outlook 2010 has a build-in feed reader. Lets say that you want to migrate your Google Reader RSS feed subscriptions to Outlook 2010, the quickest way would be to generate the OPML file and then import it to Outlook.

The OPML(Outline Processor Markup Language) is an open standard format which can be used to import and export your feed entries from one service to another. Almost all famous feed readers today provide an option to import/export the OPML file.

Exporting OPML File From Google Reader

Launch Google reader, click the Settings located at the top-right side of the page and navigate to the Import/Export tab. Click Export your subscriptions as an OPML file link and save the OPML file.

Importing OPML File To Outlook

Launch Outlook 2010, right-click the RSS Feeds Folder, and select Import an OPML File.

Now browse and select the OPML file.


Hit Next and choose the RSS feeds that you want to import to Outlook. Since Google Reader exports all subscriptions, you can exclude some feeds from this step.

The import process will take some time depending on the size of the OPML file. You will find the final message as shown below. If there were some errors in the OPML file then you would  have seen them under the Error option.

Check the RSS folder of Outlook 2010 and you will find the list of all the feed subscriptions imported there.
