How To Comment With Pictures On Facebook

Facebook has just added a new feature (again) and quietly so, since it has come just before a major media event that the company is hosting later today. This update lets you add a picture comment to status updates. Previously, if you wanted to leave a picture in the comments, you had to do so by pasting a link to said picture, letting the link preview automatically generated by Facebook take care of the rest. Commenting with a photo is pretty much like sharing a picture on Twitter, minus the character restriction, and at the moment, you can only add photos from your local drive and not from one of your Facebook album or a direct link. Here’s how to comment with a picture, along with details on the restrictions that come with it.

Commenting with a picture is restricted between profiles and the updates shared by them. This means that you cannot reply with the new picture feature when interacting with a Facebook page. Commenting with a picture is limited to one image at a time. To add a picture to your comment, simply click the comment link and you will see a camera button at the end of the input area.

Click that camera button, select an image from your local drive and it will be added to the comment. Your comment can include both text and an image so once you’ve attached the image, you will be able to leave a text reply in the same comment as well. The picture can be removed before posting the comment by clicking the cross button that appears in its top-right corner, or even afterwards by opting to edit the comment and doing the same.

The photos themselves appear to be uploaded to an album in your profile, but that album seems to be hidden. This means that you have little to no control over the visibility and privacy of an image that you share in a comment. It also means that anyone who can read your comment can view the image you’ve posted – again this is a call to be cautious of what you share.

You will find that you are not able to comment with a picture everywhere. At present, this feature is for interaction between profiles, so you will be able to comment with a picture on any type of status update from a friend – be it text, image (except profile photos), link or video, as well as any update that a friend has shared from another profile or a Facebook page. However, you cannot comment with a picture on any update or anything shared by a Page. The same goes for people that you are just following on Facebook but don’t have them added as friends.
