The Hospital Assistant II (HA II), under supervision of the registered nurse, assists the health care team in meeting patient care needs in accordance with UCSF standards and departmental scope of service. The HA II carries out patient support responsibilities with an emphasis on unit maintenance activities. All patient care team members act to meet patient needs and learn new skills to achieve quality patient care and customer service. In addition, the HA II provides and assists with human biohazard product collection and processing, phlebotomy, preparation and cleaning of patient rooms, procedure areas, clean and dirty utility rooms, nursing and patient lounge areas, restocking clinic and inpatient areas with supplies, and performing any other duties within the non-licensed scope of practice. Moreover, the HA II will assist with scheduling and registering patients, and other clerical duties as assigned. The individual is required to follow research protocols and maintain all necessary documentation. S/he works as a team member with other staff and consistently projects a professional, caring and courteous demeanor. The HA II may travel to different Clinical Research Services (CRS) clinics to perform duties.


The Clinical Research Services (CRS) of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) integrates multiple clinical sites across San Francisco and Oakland that provide services to clinical research investigators. The CRS provides an array of services, such as Nursing Services, Sample Processing Laboratories, and Body Composition and Exercise Laboratories.

Required Qualifications • Graduation from high school and two years of appropriate experience including six months of supervisory experience where applicable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position

  • Valid Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) license
  • Current CPR certification
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology
  • Skills and experience to successfully complete blood draws with a population with high rates of mental illness, substance use, histories of ill health and injection drug use
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows. Ability to use an electronic medical record system
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow protocols
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with subjects, team members, and other departments. Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with patients, co-workers, & physicians
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while working with a diverse subject population. Prioritize multiple projects to ensure the completion of essential tasks by deadlines
