Valley Metro is seeking an intern for its Safety, Security and Quality Assurance Division. The intern will have exposure to all facets of safety and security in the regional public transportation field. The successful candidate can expect to gain an understanding of the safety, security, fare inspection activities of both the regional bus and light rail system in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements:
To qualify for the Internship Program, students must be either (a) currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate college or university as a junior or senior OR (b) graduate student AND pursuing a degree.

REQUIRED FORMS AND DOCUMENTS:

  • Resume – Include all experience in your resume related to this position. Include dates of employment and hours worked per week, in addition to the duties of the position. Include a list of all relevant extracurricular activities including community services/volunteer, professional organizations, school activities and honors.
  • References – Name, email address and telephone number of one (1) graduate advisor or instructor.
  • Copy of Transcript – Undergraduate and graduate transcript to date (unofficial transcripts will be accepted). Priority will be given to Applicants with GPA’s of 3.0 or better.

The intern will improve communication skills through observation and involvement/engagement with community members and political leaders. Areas to be exposed to include:

  • Safety Culture Development for a diverse public transit system-Safety Management System
  • Development of a State of Good Repair procedure for rolling stock for public transit assets and structures
  • Quality Assurance/policy procedure/audits/risk assessment and analysis
  • Rail Project Certification Program with oversight from the State and FTA
  • Exposure to large capital rail projects with emphasis in safety and security design and construction
  • Contract Monitoring and Security Enhancement on a barrier free/open boarding light rail system
  • Involvement in social service outreach programs with mental health and substance abuse providers as well as Tribal social services and outreach
  • Exposure and involvement in the following safety and security planning activities:
  • Emergency Management
  • Continuity of Operations
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response

Specific activities the intern will be involved will include, but not be limited to:

  • Statistical data collection and analysis of criminal trends with mitigation through special programs and/or projects
  • Work closely with local public safety stakeholders including fire, police and emergency management
  • Safety and security planning and implementation at special events (e.g. NCAA Final Four activities in downtown Phoenix)

Work Environment:
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
