Fixing ‘Cannot Play This DVD’ Error Message In Windows Media Player

How many times have you seen that whenever you play a DVD movie it gives the following error, “Cannot Play This DVD” in Windows Media Player? It is the most annoying message I have ever seen in Windows and to be honest, I really hate it when this message pops up. No, I am not an old fashioned person and I don’t use Windows Media Player anymore. The best way to fix this problem is to download VLC player(I use this media player personally, since it plays all formats). The problem arises when my family members still prefer Windows Media Player due to it’s ease of use and also because they are reluctant to move to a new media player, so I have to fix this error for them.

You must have heard about Divx codec, which allows DVD quality movies to be compressed without loosing much quality in terms of both Audio and Video. You can’t play Divx videos in Windows Media Player, similarly there are tons of other formats, you will have to download the codec packs before you are able to play these formats in Windows media player.

You will find plenty of codec packs out there for different formats, all calming that they are complete solutions for the problem. It can be pretty much confusing which codec pack to use so that almost all formats can be played easily. After a bit of researching I found K-Lite Codec Pack to be the best, which you can download from here.

K-Lite comes in 3 different packages, Basic, Standard, and Full. According to it’s developer,

K-Lite Codec Pack Basic contains only the most essential things. It contains everything you need to be able to play the most popular and widespread formats. It is small enough to fit on a single floppy. Also great for including on your movie CDs.
K-Lite Codec Pack Standard contains everything you need to play all the commonly used formats. This package should be enough for the average user.
K-Lite Codec Pack Full contains even more codecs. It also has encoding support for the various formats. This package is for power users and people who do their own encodings.

I am currently using the Full version, and I will recommend the same to you. It is 14.2MB in size but is worth it.

Alternative Option

If you are still getting an error then you can download another useful codec pack called XP Codec Pack from here.

Note: If you want a wide range of formats to play in Windows Media Player, you can download and install both codec packs. After the installation make sure that you restart your computer.

I hope this helps, if you are having any problems let me know in the comments. 🙂
