Earlier we had covered a guide on enabling Webtop service over HDMI on the Motorola Atrix 4G, but that was for an Atrix running a Froyo firmware. This time around, XDA-Developers forum member _unknown has developed a solution to rid you of the need of those pricey docks for you Atrix 4G running Android 2.3.4 or more specifically the HKTW firmware. With this Mod in place, you can now enable Webtop over HDMI while running the Gingerbread OS.
The solution lies in a modified APK and the use of ADB to enter some commands in the terminal or command prompt. According to the developer:
“This new APK seems to contain more interesting options for the HDMI display, for example: Clock Widget, Gallery, Music, Home. Sadly, none of these options actually do anything on the big screen, they just display the interface on the phone.”
Regardless of that, the Webtop function works great. The developer has released a developer oriented APK as well for those who wish to try and help in making the missing functions work again. We will not be dealing with that here, instead, we’ll be focusing on simply getting the basic Webtop function working via HDMI. So here’s how you can do that.
Disclaimer: Please follow this guide at your own risk. AddictiveTips will not be liable if your device gets damaged or bricked during the process.
- To begin, download the Webtop Hack and extract the contents.
- Copy the apk files relevant to the firmware you’re on, to the root of your SD card.
- Assuming you have set up ADB correctly, open terminal or command prompt and enter the following commands:
adb shell su mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /system mv /system/app/DockService.apk /system/app/DockService.bak rm /data/dalvik-cache/*DockService* cd /system/app cp /sdcard/DockService.apk ./ chown 0:0 ./DockService.apk chmod 644 ./DockService.apk reboot
That’s it! You’re done, go ahead and experiment to see if this mod worked out for you as intended. For updates and queries related to this mod, head over to the forum thread at XDA-Developers.
