This position will research and develop ideas for new products and the methods used to make them. You will also work to improve the performance and efficiency of existing products. In this position you will need to be able to use computer-aided design software. You will need to be able to combine engineering and design principles. Additional responsibilities include managing the company’s projects; reviewing proposed designs for constructability, value-engineering; creating, updating and enforcing project schedules; problem solving; coordinating project meetings; keeping project records and documents; managing project cost, including labor; managing change orders, acquiring permits when necessary, managing necessary project documents as well as physically inspecting projects to monitor progress and compliance with company standards. Analytical thinking is an important asset, as you are often required to prioritize your own work, and develop processes that monitor progress and performance for the company.

Job Tasks:

  • Conduct project progress meetings with Senior Management and Design personnel on a regular basis to discuss status of projects, determine project progress and take immediate action to respond to problems and concerns.
  • Research using mathematical modelling to work out whether new developments and innovations would work and be cost effective.
  • Develop new product renderings defining the product look and user interface, using Solidworks, AutoCAD 2D & 3D
  • Review all drawings before fabrication.
  • Create components for the 3D solid modeling design tool library using manufacturer’s specification and company procedures using Solidworks.
  • Proactively identify issues that could lead to problems and facilitate their solutions
  • Remain current on leading-edge technology, new materials, industry processes and their effect on our manufacturing facility.
  • Mentor junior designers
  • Research various technologies, white papers, manufacturer’s technical publications, etc., to identify the best materials and design approaches for the Company’s unique products.
  • Determine and implement the appropriate level of project control (i.e.: submittal logs, change order logs, etc.)
  • Manage project costs to assure that budgets are maintained. Document and manage changes in the work to secure the interests of the entire project team.
  • Document project completion; manage the project closeout process to assure timely completion.
  • Participate in weekly Production meetings.
  • Perform quality control inspection before product shipment.

Project Management Skills

  • Understands the means and methods of manufacturing.
  • Has a working knowledge of civil, architectural, mechanical and electrical work.
  • Has a working knowledge of the cost of goods and services; has a demonstrated ability to solicit, evaluate and manage the price, schedule and quality objectives of individual projects.
  • Can create a 3D visualization of the end product and knows how to get there.
  • Understands the sequencing of work and the strategy of creating effective project schedules.
  • Understands project cost control and change order management.
  • Understands contemporary software applications associated with managing and controlling workflow.

Requirement Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Construction Management, or 10 years of direct experience.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience managing work activities and subcontracted work
  • Excellent teamwork skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Thrive in a hands-on working environment
  • High initiative
  • Good Computer skills
  • Working knowledge of computer automated design (CAD) software, preferably with Solid Works and Inventor software.
  • Proficient with computer software used in the manufacturing industry
