Convert iOS 5.1.1 Thethered Jailbreak To Untethered With Rocky Racoon

It’s been a wonderful day for iOS jailbreakers across the globe, as today’s Absinthe 2.0 update brought untethered jailbreak for almost all iOS 5.1.1 devices, including the A5 iPhone 4S and iPad 2, and A5X sporting iPad 3 (the new version). You may even check our iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak guides for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S here, and here for the new iPad. However, there had been the A4 devices, too, that already had a jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1, albeit a tethered one. If you have an iPhone/iPod touch that was tethered jailbroken on iOS 5.1.1 until now, good news awaits, for Chronic Dev Team has released the Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether package in Cydia to get you the untethered status right away! Read past the jump for details.

Similar to the Corona Untether package that followed the release of Absinthe for iOS 5.0.1 untether, Rocky Racoon will convert your existing tethered jailbreak to an untethered one without requiring any intervention from iTunes or erasing the contents of your device. Earlier, a tethered jailbreak needed your device to be wiped completely for the untether to take effect. However, since the Chronic Dev Team took charge of the jailbreak scenario, things have become more convenient, and all you need to do now is install a package from Cydia and that should get things done for you.

To install the package, launch Cydia on your tethered jailbroken iPhone 4, iPad or iPod touch, and let all the repositories refresh. Make sure that your device is currently rocking iOS 5.1.1 (which should automatically be the case if you have a tethered jailbreak). Head to the Search tab in Cydia, and key in Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether. Install the package, and that’s it – your tethered jailbreak has converted to an untethered one right away! It’s as simple as this!

It may be interesting to point out that Rocky Racoon incorporates the same exploit that Absinthe uses for newer devices. Hence, if you are running an iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or the new iPad that you have freshly jailbroken through Absinthe 2.0, this package will automatically be among the installed ones. The thing to remember, however, is that the package is crucial to maintaining your jailbreak, and should you remove it on any of the aforementioned devices, you will lose the jailbreak!

So, that’s it, jailbreakers. Things are looking good on all fronts for now, but we know the cat and mouse game will restart as soon as Apple releases a patch for the latest exploits. Enjoy the freedom while it lasts, and let’s leave it up to the experts to save us in the future as well.
