The graphic designer is responsible for producing high-quality marketing and communications materials in a variety of mediums. This person must be a team player and be responsible for managing the quality of graphic design work performed by other City staff and vendors. This person will have a key role in protecting the City’s visual brand and image.

The graphic designer will serve as a member of the City’s Communications division and will report to the Strategic Communications Director.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Create key designs and layouts (branding, print, digital, social media etc.)
  • Provide direction on graphic design work to staff throughout the organization, ensuring compliance with graphics standards and best practices
  • Serve as the City’s gatekeeper for its visual brand and image
  • Monitor projects and give approvals through all phases of production from initial sketches to press checks
  • Stay current on industry best practices, trends and technology (design, social, email, web etc) and provide guidance and training for the team as needed

Requirements of Work:

  • Self-motivated, hardworking, well organized and resilient to ever changing needs, timelines and deliverables
  • Ability to manage own workload and meet deadlines
  • Sketch (digital or paper) concepts and communicate ideas effectively
  • Full, thorough knowledge and expertise in the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and presentation programs (PowerPoint etc.)
  • Ability to work through challenges and work well with others is a necessity
  • Knowledge of web design a plus, but not required

Required Experience and Training:

Applicants should have 4+ years’ experience as a designer at an agency, design firm, company or other governmental agency. An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered. Applicants should provide additional details about relevant training, education and experience. Applicants should specify the programs and software they are able to use.

Strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, creativity, design and computer skills are required.

Candidates must submit a portfolio of graphic design work in a variety of marketing mediums for consideration during the application process.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
