This position will be under direct supervision and assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive biological safety program designed to facilitate campus research initiatives while protecting faculty, staff, students and visitors as well as the environment from the adverse effects of research involving biological material.
The scope of responsibilities will include these essential duties but is not limited to the following,
Assists in the development and implementation of a comprehensive biological safety program designed to facilitate campus research initiatives while protecting faculty, staff, students, and visitors, as well as the environment from the adverse effects of research involving biological material
Assists with reviews of research proposals involving the use of biological materials, laboratory operations, and facilities and construction renovation plans for all aspect of biosafety to assure appropriate health and safety controls, containment, and compliance with NIH, CDC, USDA, and other federal, state, local and University requirements
Collects data by performing reviews of laboratories for biosafety compliance
Assists with identifying and evaluating occupational exposures, as well as hazardous conditions and recommends controls to eliminate and/or minimize employee health risks
Responds to laboratory and research facility emergencies involving biological material, conducts incident investigations, provides incident reports, and assists with developing and implementing corrective action measures as needed; serves as a first responder to emergency situations involving biological materials
Coordinates the performance of yearly laboratory assessments, reporting of results, and management of data compiled from assessments
Supports the activities and documentation requirements for the operation and use of high containment laboratories
Assists with developing and presenting biological safety training and educational programs
Supports and assists with efforts to ensure compliance with federal, local, state, and GSU policies, procedures, and regulations associated with research involving biological materials
Perform other professional duties assigned or requested

Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biology, Public Health, or related field and three years of related experience. Must be able to wear and use appropriate personnel protective equipment (PPE). Must be able to pass US Department of Justice security clearance. Advanced degree preferred. Experience in an academic setting preferred.

The preferred candidate should possess the following attributes,
Previous experience associated with higher education / academic office environment
Experience working in in biosafety
Completed some form of compliance & safety training regarding biosafety
Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
Strong organizational acumen and a proclivity for attention to the details
Able to multi-task, proactive with independent decision making
A self-starter, quick learner with an awareness to meet deadlines
