The purpose of this class is to provide customer service to individuals in the community who have limited or no English communication skills and to assist with the written translation of City documents/forms and with verbal interpretations. Ensures that unique concerns are addressed for community members with little or no English communication skills. The class works according to some procedures, but decides how and when to do things under general supervision.Supervision: • Exercised: Classification typically does not supervise.• Received: Human Services Coordinator I• Note: Other reporting relationships may applyExample of Duties: City of Richmond Social Services employees are required to work during a declared emergency The City of Richmond Department of Social Services is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the position of Bilingual Interpreter with strong oral and written Spanish language skills to provide customer service to individuals in the community who have limited or no English communication skills and to assist with the written translation of Social Services documents/forms and with verbal interpretations. This position will be located at our Marshall Plaza office and may work from time to time at our Southside or East District Office locations as needed.
Duties include, but are not limited to: Assists with screening interviews for walk-in customers; assists customers with filling out Social Services applications and forms; Conducts focused interpretations (spoken); Responds to and assists with customer requests, inquiries and problems on the telephone and in person; Ensures that unique concerns are addressed for customers with little or no English communication skills; Assists in the facilitation of Social Services projects; Provides written translation of Social Services forms/documents into appropriate language format; Data entry of client information; Performs routine office tasks such as answering telephones, preparing correspondence, mail processing and filing; Prepares routine monthly reports; assists in the facilitation of Social Services/community partnerships and projects.Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses: Associates Degree and at least two years of translation and interpretation experience. Bachelor’s Degree is preferred. Requires fluency in “appropriate language” (writing and oral) and English. An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
No Special Certification or License required Preferred candidate will have: Bachelor’s Degree is preferred in areas of Spanish and or Foreign LanguageFluency in Spanish language (Written and Verbal) Candidates selected for an interview will be tested on oral and written proficiency in the Spanish language.Valid Virginia Driver’s License required.
